I'm not a WIS, or whatever they call it. Well, I pretend not to be one. I'm just a guy who likes to spend his hard-earned money for things that won't break (or at least can be repaired) even after years of daily use. This is how I came across Omega's Seamaster Pro and thus became an office diver.
Ich bin nun echt kein WIS, oder wie das heißt. Na gut, ich rede mir ein, daß ich keiner bin. Ich gebe mein Geld nur nicht gern für Schrott aus, sondern kaufe lieber Dinge, die schön sind und auch mal etwas länger haltbar sein dürfen. So kam ich dann also zur Omega Seamaster und wurde zum "Bürotaucher".

Of course, I've always had watches. One for learning to tell the time as a kid, later digitals from Casio, as anyone would expect from a computer nerd like me, then came the Swatches: 2 chronos, one automatic, an Irony, and in the end a Poljot alarm manual wind. Then, 1995, I stopped wearing a watch, since the Swatches all died (none survived, really) and the leather straps always got too smelly for my likings. I always had some computer or mobile phone at hand to tell the time, so why would I need a watch?
Uhren hatte ich natürlich immer schon. Als Kind eine zum Lernen, als Jugendlicher Computerdepp die digitalen von Casio, dann einige Swatches: 2 Chronos, eine Automatik, eine Irony, und am Ende auch noch eine Poljot mit Wecker und Handaufzug. Dann, 1995, hörte ich auf, Armbanduhren zu tragen. Die Swatches gingen eh alle kaputt (keine hat bis heute überlebt), die Lederarmbänder stanken mir zu fies, und ich hatte eh immer einen Computer oder ein Handy in der Nähe, um die Zeit abzulesen. Was sollte ich also mit einer Armbanduhr?
In early 2002 while surfing idly on the net, I came across the Thinkgeek 24-hour watch, a Falcon Combat. And it was ugly. So I departed onto the net to go see if someone else had had the idea to build such a watch. Little did I know. I discovered sites like Timezone, Chronocentric or Watchuseek and finally got back to my old knack for watches. After a few months, I knew I had to have one again.
Anfang 2002 surfte ich gelangweilt im Netz herum und stieß dabei auf die 24-Stunden-Uhr von Thinkgeek, eine Falcon Combat. Die war häßlich. Also machte ich mich auf die Suche, ob wohl noch jemand schonmal eine solche Uhr gebaut hat. Ich ahnte nicht, was mir da bevorstand. Ich stieß auf Seiten wie Timezone, Chronocentric oder Watchuseek und mein Interesse an Uhren war wieder geweckt. Nach ein paar Monaten wurde mir klar, daß ich wieder eine haben mußte.
I soon decided to get an Omega. It's got the tradition, it's got the quality, and the prices aren't at all over the top. First, I was looking for a Speedmaster, but when I got my hands on them, I didn't enjoy what I felt. The Professional with it's plastic crystal didn't appeal to me, and the automatics had too much of a rattly feel to them while being much too thick for comfort. So I had to put everything back, and after a few weeks I knew it was going to be a Semaster Professional (a.k.a. SMP). Together with my wife, I went to the local Omega dealer, tried the Seamaster and it was simply perfect for me. So all in all, my most important tip for buying a watch would be to see it personally. Even if you find a watch great when reading a review like this, it might well happen that it doesn't at all "talk" to you in reality.
Ich hatte mich recht bald entschieden, daß es eine Omega sein sollte, denn bei Omega bekommt man Tradition und beste Qualität zu erträglichen Preisen. Zunächst hatte ich es auf eine Speedmaster abgesehen und ging in Geschäft, um sie mir anzuschauen, aber die Professional sagte mir mit ihrem Plastikglas nicht zu, und die Automatikversionen waren mir zu klapprig und dabei auch noch zu dick. Also schob ich die Entscheidung für ein paar Wochen auf und wußte dann, daß es eine Seamaster Professional (auch als SMP bekannt) sein sollte. Zusammen mit meiner Frau ging ich zum örtlichen Omega-Händler, probierte die Seamaster an, und wußte, die soll es sein. Mein erster Tip, den ich daher ab sofort gebe, ist, eine Uhr immer persönlich anzuprobieren. Auch wenn man eine Uhr nach dem Lesen eines Testberichts ganz klasse findet, kann es nämlich passieren, daß man in der Realität nicht von ihr angesprochen wird.
The great day had come. I had promised myself to wait until my current contract was to be prolonged, and then reward me with the watch.
I got the watch from the local dealer at a meagre 10% rebate. Asking for rebates (and getting them) isn't too common in Germany, and in fact, offering rebates was prohibited by law until recently.
In the mean time, I got to know a dealer who offers 20%, but this seems to be the absolute maximum. Here in Germany, one can only dream of the 35% rebates the fora are buzzing about.
At the time of writing, I've been owning the watch for 5 months.
Der große Tag war da. Ich hatte mir fest vorgenommen, zu warten bis mein zu der Zeit laufendes Projekt verlängert werden sollte, und belohnte mich, als es soweit war, mit der Uhr.
Ich habe die Uhr beim bereits erwähnten Händler am Ort gekauft und gerade mal 10% Rabatt bekommen. So ist das nun mal hier in Deutschland.
In der Zwischenzeit kenne ich einen Händler, der 20% anbietet, aber mehr scheint wirklich nicht drin zu sein. Von den 35%, von denen in den Foren immer die Rede ist, kann man hierzulande scheinbar nur träumen.
Ich besitze die Uhr nun seit 5 Monaten.
The bracelet is my only point of critique. I'm desperately trying to love it, but it's either too wide or too tight. The half link that's included is just not an appropriate method of adjusting it the right way for me. This is where there's room for improvement. Since I got me a nasty bruise after only a few days, I've been looking for and trying alternatives to the stock bracelet.
My wife has gotten a mid-size SMP in the meantime (see below), and she doesn't have any problems at all. So it may well be a matter of personal preference.
Das Armband ist mein einziger Kritikpunkt. Ich versuche wirklich, es zu mögen, aber es ist entweder zu weit oder zu eng, und das halbe Glied, das beiliegt, ist einfach eine zu grobe Einstellmethode. Da gibt es Verbesserungsbedarf. Seit ich mir gleich nach wenigen Tagen einen richtig bösen blauen Fleck zugezogen habe, suche und probiere ich immer wieder Alternativen zum Gliederarmband.
Meine Frau ist stolze Besitzerin einer mittelgroßen SMP, und sie hat nicht die Probleme, die ich habe. Es kann also durchaus an einer persönlichen Vorliebe liegen.
The case of the full-size is just right for men's arms. I can recommend everyone who is afraid of the 41mm case (size of the bezel) to see the full- and mid-size in real-life. Once you've had the full-size on your wrist, the mid-size looks unnaturally small. They are both smaller in reality than one would expect.
The case is 11.5mm thick but looks rather flat because the edges of the caseback are beveled. It has a very "streamline" look when sitting on the wrist.
The "crown" at 10 o'clock is a helium release valve. It's only useful for deep sea saturation diving and completely irrelevant for office divers like me, and even "regular" divers have no use for it. It's not a whole lot more than a gimmick to distinguish the SMP from other diving watches. Here's an article at timezone.com explainig the gory details.
Das Gehäuse der "großen" ist genau richtig für Männerarme. Ich kann jedem, der sich vor dem dicken Brummer fürchtet (die Lünette hat einen Durchmesser von 41mm), empfehlen, sich einmal die Große und die Mittelgroße im Original anzuschauen. Wenn man einmal die Große am Handgelenk hatte, wirkt die Mittlere irgendwie unnatürlich. Ich sage immer: Sie sind beide im Original kleiner, als was man erwartet.
Das Gehäuse ist an seiner dicksten Stelle 11,5mm dick, wirkt aber sehr viel flacher, da die Rückseite am Rand ein wenig abgeschrägt ist. Die Uhr sitzt sehr schön und flach auf dem Handgelenk.
Die zweite "Krone" bei 10 Uhr ist ein Helium-Auslaßventil. Es ist nur nützlich, wenn Taucher in großen Tiefen in einer mit Helium verdünnten Atmosphäre arbeiten. "Bürotaucher" wie ich, oder "normale" Taucher haben eigentlich keine Verwendung dafür. Es ist nicht sehr viel mehr als ein Gimmick, das die SMP von anderen Taucheruhren unterscheiden soll. Ein Artikel auf timezone.com erklärt (leider auf Englisch), was es damit genau auf sich hat.
The crystal is made of artificial sapphire and therefore can only be scratched by a diamond. It's only got an anti-glare coating on the inside, so that all in all there's always some reflection in the crystal. The big advantage about this is that since the outside has no coating, there's nothing that can ever be scratched. You can slide your car keys across it, they'l just skate around without leaving any trace on the crystal. (Yes, I actually did this.)
The image shows the full reflection of the sky through a window. See the bluish glare? That's the anti-glare coating on the inside. This is a staged shot especially for capturing the glare. Of course, real-life reflections aren't that bad.
Das Uhrglas der SMP ist aus künstlichem Saphir und kann somit nur von Diamanten verkratzt werden. Es ist nur auf der Innenseite entspiegelt, so daß es insgesamt schon einige Reflektionen gibt. Der große Vorteil dabei ist jedoch, daß die Außenseite keine Entspiegelung hat, die verkratzt werden könnte, und daß sie somit theoretisch ewig haltbar sein sollte. Man kann bedenkenlos mit den Autoschlüsseln darüberkratzen, die gleiten nur hilf- und reibungslos darüber und hinterlassen keine Spuren. (Ja, das habe ich wirklich getan.)
Das Bild zeigt die Reflektion des hellen Himmels durch ein Fenster. Der bläuliche Schimmer kommt von der Entspiegelung auf der Innenseite. Das hier ist ein gestelltes Bild, um eben diesen bläulichen Schimmer einzufangen. In der Realität sind die Reflektionen nicht so extrem.
A big point that keeps reappearing on every forum (and on every bracelet) are scratches. The bracelet seems to attract scratches like a magnet, and so mine looked not like new anymore at all, after only 4 weeks. If this is a problem for you depends on what you expected. I intended to wear this watch daily, so the scratches aren't a problem for me at all. I keep reading that it's possible to polish them away, but that's a little bit over the top for me. The watch head itself is not that scratch-prone, but the bezel is so exposed that it's in constant danger of getting scratches and dings, and that's what it does over time. One day mine was dinged between the 17 and 18 minute marker and I've no idea where it came from. The polished parts of the case also show some wear over time, this is visible in some of my pictures.
All I can say is: It's just a watch. Personally I'm more angry about scratches on my car than on my watch.
Ein Thema, das immer wieder zur Sprache kommt, sind die Kratzer, die das Gliederband anzuziehen scheint, wie ein Magnet. Meins sah nach 4 Wochen schon nicht mehr wirklich neu aus. Ob das ein Problem ist, hängt davon ab, mit welchen Erwartungen man die Uhr angeschafft hat. Ich hatte schon vor, sie täglich zu tragen und wußte, daß da ein gewisser Verschleiß nicht ausbleiben würde. Die Uhr selbst ist nicht ganz so empfänglich für Kratzer, aber natürlich ist die Lünette so exponiert, daß der eine oder andere Kratzer oder Delle nicht ausbleiben wird. Bei mir war eines Tages eine kleine Delle zwischen der 17- und 18-Minuten-Markierung. Keine Ahnung, wo ich mir die eingefangen habe. Die polierten Stellen verkratzen ebenfalls mit der Zeit leicht, das kann man in manchen meiner Fotos auch recht gut erkennen.
Ich lese überall, daß man die Kratzer am Armband auspolieren kann, aber halte das für ein wenig übertrieben. Es ist doch nur eine Uhr. Mir persönlich machen Kratzer an meinem Auto deutlich mehr zu schaffen, als das, was meine Uhr sich so einfängt.
The crown has 3 positions: In the first position (directly when unscrewed) it just winds the watch. Pull it out one stop and you're in date quick-set mode. Pull it out completely, and the second hand stops and the time can be set.
I set mine as follows: First, I pull the crown out completely and just make sure that the hour hand is in the lower half of the dial, to make sure it doesn't interfere with the date mechanism. Then I push it in one stop and advance the date to one day before the current date. I then wait for the seconds hand to reach zero and pull out the crown completely to make the seconds hand stop at zero. I then advance the hands, first across the date change, and then to the correct time I want to synchronize to, usually 1 or 2 minutes into the future. When the right time is reached, I push the crown in. That way, the seconds and minute hands are nicely synchronized.
Die Krone hat 3 Positionen. In der ersten Position (gleich nach dem Aufschrauben), kann man mit ihr die Uhr einfach aufziehen. Zieht man sie eine Position heraus, kann man das Datum schnell verstellen. Zieht man sie ganz heraus, wird der Sekundenzeiger gestoppt und man kann die Uhrzeit einstellen. Ich stelle meine wie folgt: Zuerst ziehe ich die Krone ganz heraus und sorge dafür, daß der Stundenzeiger in der unteren Hälfte des Zifferblatts ist, um nicht dem Datumsmechanismus in die Quere zu kommen. Dann drücke ich sie eine Position hinein und stelle das Datum auf einen Tag vor heute. Ich warte dann, bis der Sekundenzeiger auf Null steht und ziehe die Krone wieder ganz heraus, um den Sekundenzeiger auf Null anzuhalten. Dann drehe ich die Zeit erstmal über den Datumswechsel hinweg und stelle sie dann auf 1 oder 2 Minuten in der Zukunft, so wie ich sie synchronisieren will. Wenn es soweit ist, drücke ich die Krone ganz rein. Damit sind der Minuten- und Sekundenzeiger schön miteinander synchronisiert.
The SMP is supposed to have a power reserve of 44 hours. I can't comment on that, as mine has never run dry so far. I just wear it constantly and therefore it always seems to have enough power.
Die SMP hat angeblich eine Gangreserve von 44 Stunden. Ich kann das nicht so richtig beurteilen, denn ich habe sie noch nie so lange abgelegt, daß sie stehengeblieben wäre. Ich trage sie tagsüber ständig, so daß der Nachschub an Bewegungsenergie immer gesichert zu sein scheint.
The Seamaster Professional is a COSC certified chronometer. This means that, on average, it may gain 6 seconds or lose 4 seconds per day.
It is said that watches need a break-in phase, and that's exactly how it was. In the beginning the SMP already was full within specification, but with rather strong deviations depending on it's overnight positioning (12 up/crystal up/crown up). In one night, depending on the position it would gain or lose as much as 5 seconds.
In the meantime it is very accurate with a deviation of max. -1/+1 second per day, and overnight positioning only makes up for 2-3 seconds in either direction.
I believe that the SMP is as accurate as any mechanical watch can ever get.
Es handelt sich bei der Seamaster Professional um ein COSC-zertifiziertes Chronometer. Sie darf also im Mittel nicht mehr als 6 Sekunden pro Tag vorgehen, oder 4 Sekunden pro Tag nachgehen.
Es heißt, daß Uhren eine Einlaufphase brauchen, und genauso war es bei mir. Gleich zu Anfang lief die SMP voll innerhalb der Spezifikation, allerdings mit ziemlich starken Schwankungen, abhängig davon, wie sie z.B. über Nacht abgelegt war. Die Positionierung (12 oben/Glas oben/Krone oben) konnte dabei schonmal 5 Sekunden Gewinn oder Verlust in einer Nacht ausmachen.
Mittlerweile geht die Uhr sehr genau, mit maximal -1/+1 Sekunde Abweichung pro Tag, und die Positionierung in der Nacht kann nur noch ca. 2-3 Sekunden in jeder Richtung herausholen.
Ich glaube nicht, daß eine mechanische Uhr sehr viel genauer sein kann, als die SMP.
Since I'm not an expert on watches, I can't say much about the movement, and since I'd really, really never dare to open the watch, I don't have a photograph of it.
It's an Omega caliber 1120 with 23 jewels and 28800 beats per hour. The 1120 is a modified version of the ETA 2892/A2, which is coming from the Swatch group, just like Omega. A better look at the the movement can be found here.
Da ich kein Uhrenexperte bin, kann ich hierzu nicht viel sagen, und da ich es niemals wagen würde, die Uhr zu öffnen, habe ich auch kein Foto davon.
Es handelt sich um das Kaliber Omega 1120, mit 23 Lagersteinen und 28800 Schlägen pro Stunde. Das 1120 ist eine modifizierte Version des ETA 2892/A2, das wie Omega aus dem Swatch-Konzern stammt. Einen besseren Einblick in das Uhrwerk gibt es z.B. hier.
As I have my problems with the bracelet, I've started experimenting with alternatives. This were two nice NATO/G10 straps and the ubiquitous Hirsch Carbon Sport, all of which I got from Eddie Platts at Timefactors, who ships them really fast from England to Germany.
All straps have on thing in common: They are much lighter than the bracelet. I perceive this as an advantage, but it's a matter of individual taste.
Da ich mit dem Gliederband so meine Probleme habe, habe ich natürlich die eine oder andere Alternative versucht. Das waren zwei NATO/G10-Bänder sowie das unvermeidliche Hirsch Carbon Sport, die ich alle von Eddie Platts von Timefactors bekommen habe, der sie richtig schnell innerhalb von 1-2 Tagen von England nach Deutschland lieferte.
Alle Bänder haben eins gemeinsam: Sie sind viel leichter als das Metallband. Ich empfinde das als Vorteil, aber das ist Geschmackssache.
These are made of nylon, are in one part, and get threaded through the springbars on the watch. Air passes through them, so they are very comfortable on hot days. Unfortunately they have a tendency to get smelly after a few weeks, and once they've been in the washer, the hardware parts aren't looking particularly good anymore. Nevertheless, they are dirt cheap and are always a welcome, sporty alternative.
Es handelt sich dabei um Bänder aus Nylon, die einteilig sind und durch die Federstege geführt werden. Die Bänder sind luftdurchlässig und damit für die ganz heißen Tage recht gut geeignet. Nach einigen Wochen fangen sie leider zu stinken an, und wenn man sie in der Waschmaschine hatte, ist das Metall ein wenig unansehnlich. Allerdings sind sie ausgesprochen billig, so daß man nicht klagen kann und sie immer wieder eine willkommene, sehr sportlich aussehende Alternative sind.
The HCS is a very nice and even elegant alternative. It's got a carbon structure on it's top and rubber on the bottom. The white stitching matches the white markings on the SMP's dial very vell. This is the strap that I wear most frequently. I wear it on the standard tang buckle.
Das Hirsch Carbon Sport ist eine sehr schöne und durchaus elegante Alternative. Es hat auf der Oberseite eine Carbonstruktur und die Unterseite besteht aus Gummi. Die weißen Nähte passen sehr schön zu den Markierungen auf dem Zifferblatt der SMP. Dies ist ein Band, das ich sehr oft trage. Ich benutze dabei die standardmäßige Dornschließe.
The SMP dial is the definition of readability. I can read it without glasses from like a meter away, and with glasses I can read it across the room. It glows all night, although not as bright as some people seem to expect. Of course, when you're coming from bright sunlight into an indoor area, the luminous material is so strongly charged that you can see it glow without the environment being really dark, but in reality, after a whole night, it's just enough to be nicely readable.
Das Zifferblatt der SMP ist die "Lesbarkeit" in Person. Ich kann es ohne Brille noch aus einem Meter Entfernung lesen, und mit Brille kann ich es von der anderen Seite des Zimmers sicher ablesen. Es leuchtet die ganze Nacht, auch wenn manche Leute sich das scheinbar etwas heller wünschen würden. Natürlich, wenn man aus dem prallen Sonnenlicht in ein Gebäude geht, ist die Leuchtmasse derart geladen daß man dort auch ohne Dunkelheit das Leuchten sieht, aber in der Realität ist es so, daß es nach einer ganzen Nacht gerade noch genug ist, um gut lesbar zu sein.
I'd go for "the black one" again any day. It's a great, classic design. Compared to the blue "Bond" design that my wife has, I'd say that both have their advantages. The black one is more on the sporty and practical side, while the blue one has a jewelry appeal and is more dressy. Personally I feel more comfortable with the all-black model.

Ich würde mich wieder für die Schwarze SMP entscheiden. Verglichen mit dem blauen "Bond"-Modell, das meine Frau besitzt, würde ich sagen, daß beide ihre Vorteile haben. Die Schwarze ist eher sportlich und praktisch, während die "Blaue" eher wie ein Schmuckstück wirkt und eleganter ist. Ich persönlich fühle mich mit der etwas weniger auffälligen "Schwarzen" wohler.
Ich hoffe, dieser kleine Report hat Ihnen gefallen. Über Kommentare und Verbesserungsvorschläge würde ich mich freuen.

After I had written this review, the watch started to lose time. In January 2003, it was down to -12 seconds per day. What I thought to be a one-day job for the watchmaker, turned out as an ordeal that took almost 5 months. The jeweller where I got it didn't seem to be able to do it for some reason and sent it to Omega/Swatch Germany. On the first attempt, it came back and still lost 11 seconds per day. On the second attempt, accuracy was okay, but the seconds hand wouldn't hack anymore. I was simply terrified.
I wrote a nice letter to Omega in Bienne and complained about the quality of service in Germany. After a little further conversation, the watch went through a complete revision directly at Omega in Bienne, where they replaced a really amazing number of parts in the movement. They also refinished its bracelet to "good as new" state, all under warranty.
I just hope that the SMP won't let me down again. I tend to attribute its initally lousy quality to the jeweller where I got it and suspect that it had been sitting in the window in that small town pedestrian district for a long time before I finally got it.
I'm disappointed about "my" jeweller, and I'm also deeply disappointed about the quality of service that I got from the Omega workshop at Swatch Group in Germany.
However, the courteous and helpful people at Bienne have restored a lot of my faith in Omega. Let me say a big "thank you" to Bienne.

Nachdem ich diesen Bericht fertiggestellt hatte, begann die Uhr, nachzugehen. Im Januar 2003 ging sie schließlich 12 Sekunden pro Tag nach. Ich dachte, ein Uhrmacher könnte das in einem Nachmittag beheben, daraus wurden dann aber leider fast 5 Monate. Der Juwelier, bei dem ich die Uhr gekauft hatte, konnte aus irgendwelchen Gründen die Arbeit nicht selbst durchführen und hat die Uhr zu Swatch nach Pforzheim gesendet. Als sie von dort zum ersten mal zurückkam, ging sie noch immer 11 Sekunden pro Tag nach. Im zweiten Versuch war der Gang in Ordnung, aber der Sekundenstop funktionierte nicht. Der Schreck sitzt mir heute noch in den Knochen.
Ich habe daraufhin einen Brief zu Omega in Biel geschrieben und mich über den Service in Deutschland beschwert. Einen Schriftwechsel später habe ich die Uhr dann direkt in die Schweiz geschickt, wo sie von Omega einer vollständigen Revision unterzogen wurde, bei der interessanterweise ziemlich viele Werksteile getauscht wurden. Freundlicherweise wurde auch das Massivband neu satiniert, alles unter Garantie.
Ich hoffe wirklich, daß die SMP mich nicht noch einmal im Stich lassen wird. Ihre lausige Qualität schreibe ich einfach mal dem Juwelier zu, bei dem ich sie gekauft habe, und in dessen Schaufenster sie vermutlich zu lange in der Sonne gelegen hat, bevor ich sie gekauft habe.
Ich bin von der Arbeit "meines" Juweliers enttäuscht, und noch enttäuschter bin ich von der Leistung der Omega-Werkstatt bei Swatch in Pforzheim.
Glücklicherweise konnten die freundlichen und hilfsbereiten Omega-Mitarbeiter in Biel wieder einen Teil meines Vertrauens herstellen. An dieser Stelle möchte ich mich herzlich in Biel bedanken.
